The Course Behind Tournament Hills Lost Its Tour Stop. Now It Has a Home Team.

On September 29, 2026, UNLV Athletics and TPC Summerlin announced that the club will become the permanent home of the UNLV men's golf program. The team gets the championship course, the practice facilities and a headquarters building on the property. The news came one week before what used to be tournament month. October at TPC Summerlin once meant grandstands, a PGA Tour field and national television. This is now the second October in a row without that. For the 130 custom homes of Tournament Hills, the private course at the center of the neighborhood has changed what kind of place it is. It used to be a tour venue that hosted one week a year. Now it is a home course that is booked all year by Las Vegas golf.

The UNLV deal is the clearest sign yet that the change is permanent. Read alongside the PGA Tour's latest schedule, it looks less like a stopgap and more like the course's next chapter.

What UNLV is actually moving into

The announcement is specific about what the Rebels get. The James Cashman III Building at TPC Summerlin becomes the program's headquarters and clubhouse. According to UNLV, the facility includes:

  • Indoor simulators
  • Player development space
  • Locker rooms
  • Areas set aside for team operations

The team also gets the par-72, 7,243-yard championship layout and the 12-acre practice area, which UNLV calls a year-round training base. UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper thanked TPC Summerlin, the PGA Tour, the Rebel Golf Foundation and its president, Daron Dorsey, for backing the project. Head coach Andres Gonzales said the facility would help the program recruit "the next generation of outstanding student-athletes."

TPC Summerlin General Manager Brian Hawthorne described the club's side of the arrangement:

"This relationship reflects our commitment to supporting the growth of the game in Southern Nevada while providing student-athletes with a first-class environment to develop their skills, pursue championships and represent Las Vegas on a national stage."

The team arriving has a strong record. UNLV won the Mountain West Championship last season and reached the NCAA Championship in 2025. The program has produced two individual national champions and many PGA Tour players, and it won the 1998 national team title. A home course has a different relationship with a club than a once-a-year tournament does. A tournament takes over the property for a week and then leaves. A college team is there in the mornings, during the season and in the offseason. UNLV's word for the arrangement is "permanent."

Why October stopped being tournament month

The Shriners organization dates its tournament's run from 1983 to 2024 and describes it as having ended. Shriners Children's ended its title sponsorship after the October 2024 edition. That December, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the PGA Tour's 2025 fall schedule left Las Vegas off the Tour for the first time in 41 years.

The reasons were mostly about the calendar. Patrick Lindsey, the former executive director of the Shriners Children's Open, told the Associated Press in April 2025 that top players routinely skipped fall events. They did not want to take opportunities from players who needed the points to keep their tour cards, and the fields suffered for it. A fall date also meant competing with the NFL and college football after the majors were over.

In the same report, John Norris, the PGA Tour's senior vice president of tournaments, said the Tour wanted to come back. "Vegas is a market for big events," he said. "They don't do anything small." The AP reported that the Tour hoped to return with an early-season event that would draw the sport's top names, not before 2027. Norris said the Tour had no appetite for playing in the fall again, and summer heat above 110 degrees ruled out the middle of the year.

What the 2027 schedule settled

On August 26, 2026, the PGA Tour released its 2027 schedule through the TOUR Championship. The season starts in January with The American Express in California and ends with the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, August 23 to 29. The schedule has 36 tournaments, including eight Signature Events. The only new event is the Sompo Championship at Silverado Resort's North Course.

None of the named events is in Las Vegas.

One line in the table is still open. The week of February 15 to 21, 2027, the same week as The Genesis Invitational at Riviera, carries a second event with tournament, course and location all listed as TBD and worth 300 FedExCup points. The release doesn't say where that event will go, and nothing in it rules Las Vegas in or out. A 300-point slot played opposite a 700-point Signature Event is a smaller event than the "big event" Norris described, and so far it is the only early-season opening on the 2027 calendar. The 2027 FedExCup Fall schedule hasn't been announced either. A fall event would mean the Tour going back to the dates its own tournament executive said it had no appetite for. The same release says a new two-series competitive structure begins in 2028.

That makes the UNLV agreement easier to read. The PGA Tour owns and operates TPC Summerlin, as UNLV's announcement points out. One month after publishing a schedule that names no Las Vegas event, that same owner committed space at its Summerlin club to a college team for the long term.

Who used the course in 2026

Without a tour week, the 2026 calendar was made up of Southern Nevada events. These are the ones the research could document.

Date Event Status
July 7–9, 2026 Nevada Golf Men's State Amateur Championship Completed. Phil Reedy won in a playoff and earned a U.S. Amateur exemption
July 13, 2026 To The Max Foundation annual golf classic, supporting autism acceptance Scheduled. No post-event confirmation found
Sept. 8, 2026 VGK Golf Classic, benefiting Las Vegas organizations through the VGK Foundation Completed. Braeden Bowman's group won
Sept. 29, 2026 TPC Summerlin named permanent home of UNLV men's golf Announced

The State Amateur is a good marker of the change. In 2025 it was played at Anthem Country Club. In 2026 it came to TPC Summerlin. The Golden Knights' event has also become a regular September date there. Shea Theodore's group won the 2025 edition on September 15. The team's July announcement said the 2026 event was not open to fans or the public. That fits the pattern. The course now hosts golf for Las Vegas players, organizations and charities, not for a ticket-buying gallery.

These events were spread across two summer days, a September Tuesday and, as of this fall, an entire college season. The old schedule put about one large week of activity on the property each October.

Where touring pros play in Las Vegas now

Tour-level golf has not left the valley. It has moved to different courses and to spring. The LPGA's Aramco Championship was played April 2 to 5, 2026, at Shadow Creek with a $4 million purse. The year before, Shadow Creek hosted the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, a 64-player event with a $2 million purse. The Epson Tour, the LPGA's official qualifying tour, brought the Reliance Matrix Championship presented by Epson to Spanish Trail Country Club May 7 to 10, 2026, with a $250,000 purse.

Meanwhile, the biggest pro golf on this month's calendar is a regional event. The Tri-State PGA lists its Las Vegas Pro-Am for October 12 to 14 at Paiute Golf Resort's Snow Mountain course.

The next date to watch

UNLV's 2026-27 schedule lists the Las Vegas Collegiate beginning February 28, 2027. UCLA's schedule shows the same event running February 28 to March 2. Neither schedule names the course, so for now it is unknown whether the Rebels will host it at their new home. Two Tour announcements are still to come: where the TBD event on February 15 to 21, 2027, will be played, and the 2027 fall schedule. Those are the only open slots on the 2027 calendar.

For members, the clubhouse itself has not changed. The Players' Pub, the Summerlin Dining Room, the Patio Grill and the Poolside Café are all still listed among the club's dining options. The change is who is on the range most mornings. That will be the defending Mountain West champions, working out of the James Cashman III Building.
